MODULE Brief – TB1
Photography and Society
"They are casting their problems at society. And, you know, there's no such thing as society…”.[1]
A wide range of contemporary lens-based practitioners work with the notion of ‘society’ in their practice. Society is all persuasive and inclusive/exclusive(?)! We are all part of it and yet remain an individual within the mass. What exactly is society to you and how will you make photographic works that reflect your interests, bias and experience? We will explore society with presentations, seminars and exhibition visits.
Your challenge is to produce within a collaborative partnership (with one other student or other creative, you will be graded individually) a succinct and cohesive series of photographic insights and images that reflect personally (or not) on the theme of society. You might want to look at the ‘bigger picture’ or concentrate your activity on ‘lesser’ concerns, aspects or issues that are important to you when considering society. You can approach this in any genre (fine art, fashion, studio, documentary photography etc.) and with a multitude of production processes. You should pay particular attention to the production of your final digital images. You will be encouraged to build and extend your production process expertise through the development of your own independent practice and research in response to the theme of society.
The
brief allows you to further develop your confidence in working critically as
individuals and most important collaboratively and to final resolution.
You will continue to use research and reflective journals as a means of
analysing practice, context, research and making evident your thinking and
working processes – as well as mapping any production process expertise
acquired.
